Markets and Institutions:
A Contemporary Introduction to Financial Services
2nd Edition
William L. Scott
ISBN 0-538-85963-6
This course will introduce the student to the
financial services provided by markets and institutions. The focus is on the services, rather than the
various financial institutions and their functions. This approach is appropriate given the rapid
development of technology and the broadening and overlapping of product offerings
by formerly highly regulated institutions. The networking among suppliers of funds and between the users of
funds is defined. Concepts of transaction cost, competition and asset transformation
are discussed in light of the changing roles of financial institutions.
READING ASSIGNMENTS
The student is strongly encouraged to prepare for each lecture by reading the text chapters referenced in the schedule. Adequate preparation before lecture will enable the student to focus on concepts, prepare questions, and take better lecture notes.

Attendance at all lectures is expected.
