Markets and Institutions: A Contemporary Introduction to Financial Services

2nd Edition

William L. Scott

ISBN 0-538-85963-6

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course will introduce the student to the financial services provided by markets and institutions.  The focus is on the services, rather than the various financial institutions and their functions.   This approach is appropriate given the rapid development of technology and the broadening and overlapping of product offerings by formerly highly regulated institutions.  The networking among suppliers of funds and between the users of funds is defined. Concepts of transaction cost, competition and asset transformation are discussed in light of the changing roles of financial institutions.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

The student is strongly encouraged to prepare for each lecture by reading the text chapters referenced in the schedule. Adequate preparation before lecture will enable the student to focus on concepts, prepare questions, and take better lecture notes.

EXAMS

There will be three 90-minute tests, and the final exam during this course.  The final exam will be comprehensive and test your understanding of the entire course.   The material on the tests, and final exam will be from the course text, class discussion, assigned reading and lectures. The scheduled dates are shown in the Course Schedule. There will be no make up tests without arrangements made prior to the scheduled date and then only for good reason and at the discretion of the instructor.   Unscheduled absence from any scheduled test or the final exam will be graded as a zero unless the circumstances are such as to warrant a make up session. In general, there will be no make up dates granted.
