Until last
year, MyLien Thi Nguyen had never heard of Jack Kent Cooke.
Little did she know that the late Mr. Cooke could hold the
key to her future.
Last April, MyLien found out that she would be the recipient
of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship for recent alumni
from community colleges or two-year institutions, who will
pursue bachelor's degrees at four-year institutions. The scholarship
provides up to $30,000 per year for the recipient until he
or she completes requirements for a bachelor’s degree.
MyLien, who was a student at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community
College, chose the Biloxi campus of the School of Continuing
studies to complete her undergraduate education.
“I thought about going away to school, but I’m
just more comfortable in an area that I know, and now I’m
glad I stayed here,” she says.
MyLien is majoring in Digital Design, with a minor in Media Arts.
“Eventually, I want to be part of an advertising agency,
possibly as a layout and design editor,” she says. “But
first I want to go to graduate school to get a master’s
degree in a design field.”
So far, MyLien describes her experience at SCS as “relaxing,
convenient and not as difficult as I thought it would be.
Everybody is very friendly.”
The scholarship came just in time for MyLien, who was planning
on taking out a loan to complete her education.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation
established in 2000 through the will of Jack Kent Cooke. When
he died on April 6, 1997, Mr. Cooke left most of his fortune
to establish the Foundation. Mr. Cooke believed education
was a lifelong pursuit. He was a passionate student who loved
to learn and was knowledgeable in fields as diverse as literature,
music, sports, and architecture.
